GRD-711 Special Topic: Teaching Seminar
The goal of this seminar class is to examine the science of how people learn, including how specific variables affect learning, and will raise critical questions about the applications and implications of the research on learning at the college level, in students' particular discipline.
GRD-715 Preparing TAs to be Effective Teachers
This course is designed to prepare teaching assistants to be more effective teachers. It provides information about effective teaching methods, class planning, and how to deal with classroom issues. Throughout the semester, the instructors will provide support through on-line discussions and class meetings.
GRD-716 Developing a Teaching Portfolio
This hybrid course guides participants in developing a Teaching Portfolio for improving teaching and enhancing job search potential. The web-based curriculum introduces essential elements of the portfolio, provides tools for gathering necessary documentation, and through individual feedback from the instructor, assists participants in drafting a personal Philosophy of Teaching, upon which the Portfolio is built. 2 class meetings, and weekly online assignments.
CIRTL Fellow
Graduates-through-faculty who are CIRTL Fellows have the knowledge and skills that to be effective teachers, where they are able to implement research-based “best” practices in different learning environments to achieve defined learning goals. CIRTL Fellows recognize the diversity of their students and seek to meet the needs of diverse learners. CIRTL Fellows are developing familiarity with an area of knowledge that is very new for them (i.e., outside of their STEM disciplines).
As CIRTL Fellows, graduates-through-faculty have been exposed to the pillars of CIRTL within some form of a learning community, and recognize the reasons for implementing practices associated with each pillar to be an effective and improving teacher.

BY-695 Special Topics in Biology I - CIRTL
This seminar class provided opportunities for students to interacts with professors about best teaching practices for various class types (small classes, large classes, field classes, and online classes). In addition to the interaction with professors, students were asked to prepare a sample lecture presentation on a subject of their choice for a class type of their choice. You will find my presentation as well as a video file of my presentation below.

GRD-752 CIRTL Seminar on STEM Teaching
This seminar class provided students with the opportunity to discuss recently published articles relating to the field of teaching and classroom management. Topics covered included effectiveness of group projects, student metacognition, and gender equality in the classroom among others.
GRD-755 CIRTL Teaching Practicum
This class provided the opportunity to shadow a course for a semester and observe and assist a professor in the classroom. I was able to observe the introductory biology class. I assisted the professor in many different ways. I held study sessions for students, provided study questions for each test, and was even able to give a brief lecture at the end of the semester. The whole experience was great and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to participate in this course.
